THE NEW YEAR OPENS (1929)

The Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia Prepares to
Honor Memory of the Late Mrs. Caleb F. Fox

Huntingdon Valley, with the late Mrs. Caleb F. Fox as captain, won the Philadelphia Cup last season, heading the parade of victory.  And Mrs. Fox, beloved veteran of the city's golf army, not only took intense interest in her own division's struggle but day after day she telephoned Mrs. Betz to get from her certified reports of friends on all teams in conflict.

Our own personal memory of Mrs. Fox, gathered beside the scoreboard, is the memory of friendly words of encouragement to the newcomer.  Valuable hints to the uncertain.  Constructive criticism to the careless.  Generous praise to the victor.  Cheerful sympathy to the loser.  And therefore no more fitting memorial to her could be devised than the tournament the Executive Committee is planning.

Circulars are being sent to all the clubs, asking each member to subscribe one dollar.  There will be an overwhelming response and a handsome cup will be bought and named the Margaret Crozier Fox Memorial Cup.  It will be a perpetual trophy and the woman who comes through the inter-club competition in the spring with the greatest number of matches and holes to her credit will have her name inscribed on it, and her club will hold it for the following year.

In addition, the Association will present a personal prize to the winner and as the entire force of teams will be competing, a tie may result, and this will be played off on handicap basis.  The idea is really inspired, for it will link Mrs. Fox with the inter-club programme forever.

At the Annual Meeting of the Association in December, Mrs. William S. Hilles, of the Wilmington Country Club, read the following tribute, which says exactly what every woman golfer feels about the pioneer of golf who has passed on:

"Just a few words as a tribute to Margaret Crozier Fox.

How all we women of this Association rejoiced last spring when, having recovered from the effects of a serious operation, Mrs. Fox came back from Florida and began again to play golf, and, like her old self, to play good golf.  How little any of us thought that so soon we would have her no more among us.

I do not believe that any player ever approached Mrs. Fox that she was not only met with in a kind way but was also sure of just dealing.  To us of this Association, she was always the synonym of the spirit of sport and fair play.  She radiated kindness, generosity and good nature.

She had wide interests and it is well for us to know how broad were her sympathies and how much kindness and care and consideration she bestowed on those who were less fortunate in this world's affairs.

In her death, the golfing world loses a rare good player and a character that has been an example to us all.

While we miss her and mourn her loss, we must also rejoice that we have been privileged to have had the association of so good a friend and the example of so elevated a character, and, in all senses of the word, so rare a sport."
